BUHARISM AND DEMOCRACY-Benneth Nwankwo

It is only in Nigeria that
memories are so short that
the perpetrators of countless
coups and atrocities will
wake up after being thrown
out for mismanaging the
country, and proceed to
lecture the rest of us on
'democracy.Let study Buharism with the following question.

What were the "reactions" of Nigerians, when
Babangida overthrew Buhari?.
The answer to this painful question is unanimous; Nigerians Celebrated!.
If Nigerians celebrated the exit of a military junta, who in his
youthful age pissed on Democracy, Why clamor for his return?. Memories
lost?. let touch it a bit.

The Buhari regime lasted from
December 31st 1983 to August 27,
1985. It was a government
essentially run by six men. The first
two of these six men were Major
General Muhammadu Buhari, the
Head of State and Brigadier Tunde
Idiagbon, the Chief of Staff Supreme
Headquarters and Buhari's deputy.
TUNDE IDIAGBON!!!.
Buhari's political programme
consisted overtly on suspension of
vast sections of the 1979
Constitution and a brutal clamp
down on civil society organizations
and the civil populace via the
suspension of human rights and
civil liberties.-Professor Wole Soyinka is a living witness.

Should we talk about press freedom, Notably amongst several "Decree
4".Our memories are so weak, very weak that many seems to have
forgotten ''Tai Solarin". Indeed very painful.

Professor Soyinka a friend and colleague of Solarin has this to say:

" So Tai Solarin is already
forgotten? Tai who stood at
street corners, fearlessly
distributing leaflets that took up
the gauntlet where the media
had dropped it. Tai who was
incarcerated by that regime and
denied even the medication for
his asthmatic condition? Tai did
not ask to be sent for treatment
overseas; all he asked was his
traditional medicine that had
proved so effective after years of
struggle with asthma!".

How ironic, this very man-the fearful Nigerian god is now quite
humbly, educating his former victims on the urgent need to embrace
democracy. What does he know about democracy?. A military dictator in
Democratic Field?.

The brutal execution of; Lawal Ojuolape(30),
Bernard Ogedengbe (29) and
Bartholomew Owoh (26) using a retroactive law, despite international
and local pressure. What were the reactions of meaningful
Nigerians?.Have we forgotten the riots, massive demonstrations and
fruitless judiciary actions we bravery took in its wake?.
Indeed we are lost.

In response to the brutal and unimaginable execution, Professor Wole
Soyinka wrote " This was an
unconscionable crime, carried
out in defiance of the pleas and
protests of nearly every sector of
the Nigerian and international
community – religious, civil
rights, political, trade unions etc.
Buhari and his sidekick and his
partner-in-crime, Tunde
Idiagbon persisted in this
inhuman act for one reason and
one reason only: to place
Nigerians on notice that they
were now under an iron,
inflexible rule, under
governance by fear.". Deal with it.

Nigerians, WAKE UP!
Refuse to be cowed. A leader leads by examples. He has forceful led,
he is tested and rejected. Refuse those who pissed on your Democratic
votes but now clamoring for the same votes abeit lecturing the
country on values they can
barely spell. Be redeemed.
GOD BLESS NIGERIA.
